What's this GT up to?

I've got a digger!

I recently moved him(?) into this 30 long, as I had a 55 break during a 12 hour move
(to my credit, only 1 of 22 fish died during the move!)
Since the move, this GT has been digging like mad!
(Just as I wrote that, I caught him spitting out more rocks!)

Breeding behavior?

I guess I'm confused on the sex as well, I've always assumed this is a male. But I am under the impression only the females dig?

The big one looks like a female. And from the pics it looks like the bottom one is significantly smaller which is the same problem i have. The smaller one may be digging but at that size ive been told they wont breed.

The one in the 'pit' picture is actually a convict.
(the convict definatley isn't digging. It's the big guy, the green terror.)

There is only 1 green terror in here.

I have a male red terror who digs all the time. I know it can be breeding behavior, but I am convinced that he digs just to dig. And I don't believe that digging is specific to one sex or the other, but I'm not sure about that.

I'm curious if this means that he/she is ready for a partner

Cichlids dig all the time that is what they do. I think the GT is male and the other is a convict.
