Welli ive been bouncing stock ideas back and forth and decided to make another chill tank for my room, going with a 45 gallon so its 36 by 13 by 23 i believe?
had some aquatic soil laying around from my last planted tank so ill be doing up a planted tank, dont really mind all the extra work with discus, will most likely be getting three big german blue's around 6-7 inches, or maybe some leopards, just wanted to know what you though i could fit in that tank. i was thinking 3 or 4...
also what corys can take the heat?

thanks

robb

well the 1 gallon per fish rule would apply, since discus tend to grow pretty big. but if you can keep up with water changes and such i think you can get away with more, let say 6-7. check this site out-- simplydiscus.com/forum

You need to have more than 3. At least 4, but 6 will be better. Most cories are fine in this water temp.

ok thanks wyld

from what ive heard form discus guru's it would not be great to keep alot in a planted tank since the water volume is lower, they typically follow the 1 discus per 10 gallon rule and i would have around 35 or 40 once you put the aquasoil into consideration
im not sure if i should take this advice, just because the fish will still look good IMO as long as i keep up on big water changes 2 or 3 times a week, it was also suggested to me that i just look out for a confirmed breeding pair, but i would have to drop some serious dough
i would already be dropping alot of money, but i would have my employee discount :)

If you don't care about stunting then go for 5. As long as you keep on water changes, and feed good food, they will still be able to turn out good.

IMHO, a 45 is too small for discus.

when i started out with discus i tried with a 55 planted tank with 6x 5" fish. gradually i lost all but one. the dominant fish would pick on the weakest, and in a small tank like that, the weakest didnt have enough space to hide. eventually the weakest died, and the dominant fish turns on the next weakest. the cycle continued until i had just the dominant fish remaining. a bigger tank with more fish stops this problem.

as for corys, I'd stick with the warm water fish: gossei, sterbai, adolphoi, duplicareus, seussi

ya i know its not the greatest option for discus, in a year all of my tanks will move up to my cousins house when i got to college and these discus will go into his discus tanks
