Don't get me wrong african cichlids are nice just not my cup of tea however it seems like everywhere that sells fish in my area anyways tends to be stocking more and more africans and less and less CA/SA. Also it seems everytime I inquire about different CA/SA species in said stores all I seem to get back is "ya those are nice but you could have like 20-30 africans in there" the more they are pushed on me the less I like them. Anyone else running into this?

not really must just be your area :P

Most places around here don't like to sell africans too much with the exception of peacocks. They always say Tanganyikans are too difficult to sell.

Its a business to make money. On average people have more africans/g than new worlds.

yeah its the same in my area, the vast majority of cichlids available are those various africans they have in their "assorted african cichlid" tanks, its pretty much because alot of people just want to have tons of colorful fish stocked in a tank on top of each other and dont really know anything about the less commonly available SA/CA cichlids or how personable they can be or dont want to dedicate their small tanks to single specimens, they can sell the africans easier since they are more colorful at a small size and dont get as large

Dont worry, aint that many Africans on the market now. The African Cichlid section is usually quite small. Over here we are being overtaken by the Flowerhorns. Dumb hybrids that are usually housed one per tank. There are some stores that are 90% Flowerhorns. Imagine going into your favorite LFS and seeing nothing but Flowerhorns.

Agreed in regards to Manhattan. Chinatown petshops seem to exclusively sell flowerhorns but outside the city it's an African market. I 'd rather see newbies buying 10 colorful africans for their 20 gallon tank then see them buy an oscar and pleco for it. A petshop owner I know told me once folks price themselves out of a saltwater set-ups he directs them to africans because they get lots of colorful fish that are really easy to care for without costing a fortune.

Thery are both where I am from, im lucky. I like centrals personally.
