What's with the whole triangle mouth thing?

Obviously there's a gene involved, and it's probably recessive knowing how when crossed to fish with normal mouths the fry come out with normal mouths. I probably just answered my own question but how did it come up in the first place? I've seen it on unrelated hybrids as well. I'm guessing it's a sort of short body type thing. (In the sense that it's a cosmetic genetic deformity)
