Hi all,

I recently acquired a 1 inch Fahaka puffer. All seemed normal until recently, it has been hanging out at the bottom of the tank.

Any idea what the problem could be (if there's a problem.) I started doing daily 50% water changes as soon as I noticed a change in behavior.

Tbh don't really have a clue of what's wrong with the puffer. Are you putting the guppies in quarantine before putting them in the aquarium?

How long have you owned the puffer??? And what size tank is he in and with what tankmates???

I ask coz normally at that size they will be more shy as they can easily fall prey to any predator...

Right now he's in a 1.5 Gallon Beta tank that's inside a 75 Gallon. The only "tankmates" are ghost shrimp/prawns. eventually i will let him in the 75G, but I don't want him to get sucked into the outtake at that size.

Personally speaking, i would just try and cover the intake with a sponge if you are that worried???

I let my old 1.5" fahaka roam the 200G when i first got her, and never had any problems with her getting sucked into the filters...

Since lets not forget, these guys grow fast at around an inch per month for the first year min...

The guppies were quarantined for about a month

Thank you for the suggestion. I found my 9 inch fire eel in the sump of my 220g, so I suppose i'm just paranoid. I just finished clearing out the tankmates of my 75g. I'll release him today and see if that helps.

Having also owned firr eels in the past i can tell you they will always be escape artists regardless of size and age... i lost my old 2.5' Fire eel before by him escaping through the smallest hole...

My fahaka on the hand never caused me any problems like that..,

Maybe he was sick to begin with, since most fahakas i think are wild caught, then sold to mass market...

What were your parameters? You must always treat for internal parasites, even if They promise they are tank bred or have already been treated. It's the #1 reason the reaper comes for the puffs. I am so sorry he passed, I know you did everything you could!
