It seemed fine when I looked in on it earlier when I came home from work but when I checked on it a few hours later I noticed what looks like a pebble sized, reddish colored ball shaped thing protruding from it's anus.It looks like it might be one of it's organs and Iguessing the end is near.

The fish in question is a young peacock bass.

Have you made any major changes in the tank?

My BP had his whole butt come out (it looked lumpy and pinkish, clustery) when I was switching him into another tank.. I can only imagine that he was stress'n major..

No major changes but what you describe sounds just like what's going on here. How did yours turn out?

I'll tell you this male BP is a major drama queen... but anyway... I freaked out when I saw it .. didn't know what to do!! after like 20 min he has sucked it back in... and that was back in March.. now he has a lump on the side of his body... I imagine it was some type of hemorrage..

That is called a prolapse. It can get infected if not treated properly and kill the fish. It could also just be the vent tube protuding which is common for some fish coming of spawning age.

If you think it is a prolapsed anus then keep the water extra clean and even add some salt at 1 tbs per 10 gallons.

Sounds more like a prolapse than a vent tube but I checked the fish just now when I got home from work and it seems to have pulled the organ back into it's body. Thanks guys.

Holy crap!

That's what I said when I first saw it,along with a few other choice phrases....Update,the fish seems to have recovered fully. It is back to eating rosies and is in the last day or two of a Prazipro dose.
