Whats wrong with my heater? Are my piranhas fine?

Usually my water temp is kept at 78 - 82 sometimes reaches 83. Last night probably my heater malfunctioned or something. I woke up fed my fish and for some reason they didnt each that much. I noticed a difference from them. I checked my water temp and it was at about 69 degrees. So I turned the heater all the way up to get the water warm.

The problem with this heater is that it doesnt have that thermometer thing you adjust to that temp. I just keep the switch thing at the middle line from high and low. My baby RBP's are doing good now and my water is around 76 degrees now going higher to 82.

Should I keep the adjustment thing past the middle line? I'm scared my heater might do the samething again tonight.
 
This just happened to me in my 55g. My 5 year old Via-Aqua died and the water was 69ºF with angelfish, giant otto, etc. Very scary. I know what you're going through. Don't risk leaving that heater in the tank. It could get stuck on and boil your fish just as easily as freeze them.
It's dead. Huck the heater in trash now if you love your fish. Buy an Eheim-Jager and it should last about ten or fifteen years. Best of luck.
 
you shouldn't make that drastic of an adjustment, you could go too far the other way. Being that it was just a short time period that the temp dropped, your Ps should be fine.

You need to troubleshoot and figure out why the temp dropped, may be time to get a new heater...or 2 heaters to keep each other in check.
 
My heater has been doing the same thing ): it's kinda stuck at 70 but i dont really see a change in color or activity in my fish, they seem fine. What heater do you guys recommend?
 
Eheim-Jager or Ebo-Jager if you can find a working used one. Most heaters I currently employ are second-hand Ebo-Jagers and not one has died in five years. I just bought a brand new 250watt Eheim-Jager and it was about $40.00, I think. The name changed because Eheim bought Ebo.
 
I have 4 JEBO heaters from ebay, they work just fine.
 
Eheim Jager hands down! I don't have any other brand, I do not want fish fry (or frozen fish sticks in your case)
