I just got back from my lfs and they had two motoro rays. im sorry but i could not get a picture. but the ray awas about 8" disc size male is a 75 gallon tank and all around the edge of his disc it was all pale white and flakey. what do you guys think is wrong with him?

I've seen ammonia spikes cause "burns" like that.

Its ammonia Burns. I saved a hystrix like that a few weeks ago now she almost fully healed. Alot of water changes with consistent water parameters and a little bit of melafix will heal it. The first pic is her when I first got her the second is how she looks today. As you can see its a big change over three weeks.

Yes, all the literature I've read on tgem describes this as a potential issue. The aqualog special on rays has a great section as well as the barron's book aptly named FW rays. There was a great paper published in a journal around 2005ish by a professor at the university of michigan, ron oldfield i think it is. Could be wrong on the name.

That is just sad and crazy that people don't care anything about water quality. I wanted to buy that ray so bad today just to get it out if there.

Yes its very sad I feel bad for the fish. I managed to talk the lfs owner to let me take her. Of coarse it was I'm a friend of his. He was selling it for $100. I would buy it just to save it or atleast get the owner to take proper care of it.

It could be ammonia damage from shipping, if a lfs has ammonia problems then it ought to close the doors and go try something it does know about.
