I asked what was wrong with my rainbowfish a few days ago. Was asked to supply better photos so here they are. I'm pretty sure there is a scratch on his nose. I just noticed a female was looking a little beat up. Is this just fish damage or is it a bacterial/fungal infection?

Looks to be a scrape.

It looks like the start of a bacterial infection. I lost three rainbows to bacteria (white fuzzy stuff) it killed them in a couple days tops. One after another. Once the meds came I was only able to save one. I’d treat before it gets worse.

Just the one? Im fine taking it out. You are talking abt the female right? I don't want to treat the whole tank. How fast does it spread to other fish?

Only my rainbows were effected by it. But by the time one died the next day another one would start showing signs. My meds arrived just as the third one died right as the last one was showing torn fins with white edges.
I treated my whole tank to protect my other fish. I was less worried about saving the last rainbow as I was trying to prevent the loss of more expensive fish in the tank.

I don’t know how to tell gender in rainbows, but the one in the last two pictures. But I’d treat them all.

Why are you so against treating your tank for a bacterial infection? The female does look like it could have a bacterial issue, but it's not so bad that I would cull the fish. And culling the fish does nothing for the other fish if this is a different disease, they would have already been exposed. Melafix is natural and easy on fish, and all you would have to do is take the charcoal out of your filter (if you use it) and dose for a week.

I decided to go with a light dose of melafix on the tank. I took the fish out and am treating it also. Melafix can't hurt even if nothing is wrong so i said why not.

good choice, I don't like to medicate unnecessarily either but Melafix is so useful and benign that I use it any time I see a fish with an injury
