I'm just looking for inspiration.

A guy from the LFS gave me his mature female RES two weeks ago. I had a RES before, but I want to do this one right.

Right now the turtle is in a 33 long with a large turtle dock, a heat lamp, a UVB/UVA bulb, and an Aquaclear 110 filter. I have egg crate over the turtle dock so she can't climb out or get burned by the lamps.

I have this idea of building a box to put over half of the tank that would be her basking spot, instead of the turtle dock. Still, the 33 long just doesn't give her a lot of swimming room. Maybe I should move her into a 55?

If you have a RES, or other slider type turtle, I'd like to know about your set-up. Thanks!

Female RES? You're going to need a lot bigger tank then a 33 or a 55 gallon. Think 125-150 gallon tank or heck, why not a small pond.

wtf this in a 30L?

They get bigger then that, too.

The SCL of a Red-Eared female can be over 12 inches. The width of a 30-55 gallon is 12 inches so therefore she will not be able to turn around in that sized tank.

Yes, I know. She is pretty cramped in the 33 long. I kept my last RES in a kiddie pool, but that does not give a turtle the water depth to really swim.

Maybe a stock tank purchase is in order; I should just forget about moving her into the 55. I was just thinking short term housing anyway, the 55 would give her more diving room than the 33L, even if the L x W is the same.

A stock tank would work great. I just got a 100 gallon one for my Musk Turtle pair. It's made by Rubbermaid and it cost around $100 bucks.

Aw, I like that setup VF...

Thanks guys. Actually it looks a lot different now. I've changed it all around. I took out the egg laying area for now and I put a couple pieces of driftwood inside. I'll have to get some new shots tonight.

I don't have a RES, but I have a yellow belly, which is a subspecies of the same turtle. I have it and my male peninsula cooter in a 55 for now with a turtle dock and about 16" of water, but they aren't that large yet. Once they get over 7-8", they are going into something bigger, probably a stock tank.
