when did your hole prospectus on keeping change??

i mean i was always a cichlid fan, i have run loads of tanks at its height i had 27. recently i was running 8, now this is where my change happened. i brought the goonch, not on any of my lists but never seen one just always fancied one, it was there i was there i had a spare tank so brought it.

i planned to give it what it needs and had a complete shift of prospectus, i love my dovii and give them everything but the rest are all up for sale for this one single fish i'm now planning three tanks ahead for it.

i know there are keepers that devote all there time and space to one tank and one fish so when did it change? or when did you realise you need to do things the right way round and plan stuff rather than just buy and roll with it hoping the stars align and you can give the fish everything it needs??

For me it was when I purchased a 1" sparkly fish (that, according to the stupid girl at the shop "won't get bigger than 9 inches") that grew and grew and grew... I ended up with this:
CAM00019.jpg and had to keep him in a 400ltr 5ft tank because larger tanks don't seem to exist down here, and when they do, they're the price of a damn car! That's when my perspective changed, when I realized that I couldn't house my baby comfortably. Now if I want a fish I'm not sure about, I ask them to hold it so I can do some proper research before buying it, to avoid another situation like Horrace. I probably won't own another cichlid until I can afford (and have room for) a custom tank, to make sure I never have to go through that again. :)

I am with you on that Colin, cept it started with a 10g. then a 40g for him, then a 95g, then finally got real and the 180. of coarse then I got jags, little WC, honduras female first. had in the 90g. 8 months later a little costa rican male. but this time I new what I was into, they jumped right into a 145g when the male was 9" .

The day I went to shark aqaurium changed everything. Just seeing all the different fish and tanks. It opened my eyes....paid more attention to fish I normally wouldn't.

I use to watch a lot of fish videos on youtube got my first tank (a 40b if you were wondering) in early 2011
never got smart about it until late 2015

I never really started thinking ahead until I started to get into rays. Now I'm going to be building a big tank and have another big one sitting outside.
Last impulse buy was a dorado but I am going to have the room for him in one of my tanks... or I'll just build another one

I started keeping only piranhas....had 10-12 tanks runing with solo serras and 1 pygo tank. I still love the fish but got tired of the hasstle of having 10 yanks with just 10 fish ...a couple years ago i ventured off into rays then came across characins as tankmates and well it just got out of hand from there once i upgraded tanks lol

It happened to me recently. My midevil had a small growth spurt after three years and I realized how small my 75 gallon is.
Not only him but my convict and barbs too. They're in a 48x18x12 and that foot print is so awesome. Ill eventually move them into the 75 once the midevil gets moved into a 125.
