Well I'm 16, and in my junior year in high school, and I have a 10 gallon and a 29 gallon. I'm so busy with school and other things, I unfortunately can't go get hundreds of gallons of aquariums.
So, all you people who have huge aquariums and fish, when did you start getting those tanks? After college, or what? Just curious, because I would like to be able to spend more time with my fish and pets some day. Thanks for your time.

I'm in my late 40's and got into aquariums Dec 23, 2006

I started out with large fish and quickly jumped into MF ...

... but I am also (somewhat) retired so I have plenty of time to keep up with these tanks ...

If you were my son I would suggest that you do it when time is easily available.

There are times when emergency situations can cut into your personal fun time - be aware that an aquatic life sometimes needs attention at inconvenient times.

i started fish keeping when i was ten... then when i was your age i got out of it due to lack of time... but then quickly got back into fish when i moved out and less than a year later i purchased a 210gal!!!:D i've never been quite the same since!!:headbang2( just incase you're curious i moved out when i was nineteen and still in college. i'm now 21 )

I kept aquariums up through high school. After college I bought a 55g and had that up and running over a few years. I bought a 125g and had it running, but our basement flooded (rental property) and I had to tear it down. After we moved it set idle in the basement for three years. I gave it to my Dad and he has it running w/ naturals. I now have plenty of places for a larger aquarium. I think the 55g will get put in my game room and when we finish the basement I'm going to try and build at least a 1,000g tank down there. In case you're wondering, I'm 35 now, so it may take you some time before you get those monster tanks you desire.

Depends on what you call Monsters. I'm in my late fortys. I go home after work and undind by doing my daily maintanece routine. After that I set back and just watch them for a while. I got started about 20 years ago but then got out after another baby and a major loss of about 40 Discus. I have only been back into it for a short time, but I really enjoy it. I'm not on the same scale as before, but I enjoy it more.

My first monster fish was a piranha living in my grandmother's cooking pan back when I was in brasil. I was maybe 4 or 5. I took a break until i was 12 (started to get some money), and since then i have been keeping monster fish

When did you start to become a MFKer?

When my first pleco outgrew it's 2ft tank ;)

Now a regular fish keeper (RFK) just gives fish like that away, but a MFK buys a bigger tank :) And some more plecos to fill it up :D

Cheers

Ian

My Dad had a good size aquarium when I was a tot. The 125 went to me when I was 6 (my actual 1st aquarium was a Gallo wine bottle with a mud-nose dace and a tadpole) when he upgraded. By junior high I had 4 aquariums with the 125 being the smallest. The largest was a nearly 2k gal concrete pond with a front view port (actually, it was my Mom's koi pond but, I took care of it and stocked it). By highschool, I'd built my 1st plywood tank (900 gals) for a bonded pair of silver aros.

Wow I didn't start til a few years ago. But I wanted to say I think MFK is more about spirit than tank size.
