when do cichlids lose thier ability to breed?

16 year old Dovii is very old. Do you have a pic of him.

My old JD and GT females stopped laying eggs after 2 to 3 years of active breeding. It appears that they have a finite number eggs to lay and once gone, they are done breeding. I don't know about male though because the females were done before the male. The male got mean to the female when she refused to cooperate.

Not my fish so no pic of it but I've had females lay even if they have laid for years before hand

I'm sure females will lose the ability to reproduce earlier than males, just like with people.

Dovii is an extra large and long live fish, so it is not a typical example of the reproductive life span of most cichlids. IME, most cichlids have only 2 to 3 year reproductive life span. Here is an article that confirms my observation:

The pair may spawn for a number of times (usually 4-5 times over a span of two years) and then become “inactive” although they will live for much longer.
