I'm sure to get a variety of answers to this question, but when do I need to get a new tank for my ripsaw cat? I have him in a 55gal with a number of other, much smaller, fish. When I bought him less than three months ago he was 7-8" long. I just measured him yesterday morning and he's 11". That's faster than I expected him to grow, and means he's almost as long as the tank is wide.

I could put him in a standard 125, but that's still only 18" wide. So what size do I put him in? I have no idea how big these guys get.

I've seen ripsaws at the Shedd that were about three feet long, but everything at the Shedd seems to be larger than normal.

Thanks.

IMO, if the fish is a long as the tank is wide, it's time to upgrade. I believe that every fish should have enough room to move and turn around.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure how big these guys get. I'm thinking 2 feet plus. IMO a 125 will be too small for this fish one day.

I tend to agree with you. He's almost as long as the tank is wide, and I don't want him to get uncomfortable.

If continues to grow at the rate he has over the last couple months, he'll outgrow a 125 inside six months. What I'd like to find is a tank about that volume, but more square.

Thanks for the input.

Lovely fish btw, im not sure of any places that sell them at the top of my head, but have you checked aquarium makers, maybe get one made just for you. i could if i find any free time look around online to see what i find :)

Most Ripsaws top out at around 35 inches, so that gonna need a nice sized tank. You would be better off to go ahead and buy the big tank so he can just grow and save you money in the long run.

If you need a square tank, you could get one made or go to glasscages.com or make one. Glasscages.com are really cheap compared to others. You could get a glass 310 gallon square but it rather expensive.
