When do Jaguar Cichlids get lighter?

My jag has been very dark since birth (I've had him since fry).

At what size will he start getting lighter and gain the "spots", if he's a male, or spots / bars if he's female?

With my experience the lightening and red/Blue sheens didnt apear until about 4 inches. I heard constant water changes brings their colors out...

He has his blue sheens on his fin, but I'm speaking more about the lightened spotted body.

Some may not get any light areas at all - You could say there are different races of jags - From what I've read there is a southern and northern morph - the northern morph having more dark coloring all over the body and the southern morph having the large rosettes with areas of lighter coloring.
