My aro is closing in on 5 inches now, so still pretty young and small, but is starting to venture down lower into the tank lately, possibly hunting. (Till now he has always hung out up on the surface.) Is there a certain age or size when they start to have a bit more of a prey drive?

Right now he is growing up in a planted tank with some tetras and barbs... I was hoping to keep him in here for several months, 6+ inches, before moving him to the big tank, since I don't want him to get picked on by the big fish. They're pretty peaceful but as long as I don't have to, there's no reason to take the chance.

I have never seen him go after anybody (and he has never gotten feeders - pellets only) but my girlfriend said he was just down harassing a rasbora, so I figured I might as well ask now.

since they are born.
they are hunters by nature, when small feed almost on insects, but at this size they can and will eat fishes that fir in his mouth (tha's not smaal too).
they will try, maybe won't eat, but will try some bites before finding a smaller one.
small fishes like guppies, white clouds, platis and swordtails will be on his menu.
