In MN you can fish for them anytime.......

as soon as its warm enough to cast into the water? Im just guessing

In northern Illinois, they can be caught as soon as ice breaks (or feb/march). These fish seem to be very active during the cold months.

In south Georgia, i.e. Okeefenokee area, they spawn in early spring, like March, or even February. Probably just depends on climate.

Here in SC the males are coloring up and preparing to spawn. Actual spawning should be around end of Feb/first of Mar. See fins on my 9" male already starting to turn greenish.
