I'm hoping some of you experts could help me out. I came across a nice piece of driftwood but it has been out of the water for a while. The issue I have is when I went to cut some of it off there were some sections that was still light color in the center. It was the smaller branches that had this problem and also broke off fairly easy to a certain point, the main part is hard as a rock and when I tried to penetrate is with a smaller ax it barely made a dent. I'm thinking the base of the branch stayed completely submerged while the smaller branches may have floated at the top of the water to cause this situation. Plus there's a good chance this came out of SW since I live on the coast of Florida.

Stick it in a color for a few weeks and see what happens.

I always soak any wood i am hopping to put in my tank for at least a couple of weeks in a clean garbage can with a couple bricks on top... gets them well water logged...

also you might want to be careful with what you add into your tank was it can greatly affect your water quality, especially if it came out of the sea rather than f/w swamp.

boil it then soak it. any pics of it?

any pics?

thanks for the comments all. i was planning on boiling it then soaking it for a few days, i didnt realize it took weeks. I will try to post pics tonight. I also have more driftwood that came out of the Crystal River at my cabin so I may drive up there and get that. thanks again

i just grabbed a bunch of driftwood by the sea, soaked it for a day and put it in my tank, fish are doing fine but water was really yellow, now it is less yellow

you should of boiled it. would of killed any unwanted bug/parasites. some carbon in the filter should help with the discoloration. but boiling it will help take out most of the tannins.
