Hi everyone! I just wanted to know, when is it better to build a tank instead of buying one? I have to go purchase a tank soon becuz my dempseys keep fighting and plus they need the space. I plan on getting a 125 from petland which costs about 500 something. Is that a decent price? It comes with the stand, hood and lights and 50 dollars worth of fish ( i think i remember that part )

If this isnt a good deal, are there any other places to get a good deal on tanks? I would prefer a new tank instead of used.

That's really a personal question. How much are you willing to value your time and how handy are you? I live in an apartment, so no monster plywood tank for me--yet. I really respect the merit of a DIY tank and don't mind the misgivings, so I put a lot of value on the fun of building one. Other people would rather save up. Or better yet, wait around on craigslist for a good deal.

Most importantly, you need to plan ahead. You should plan your DIY in complete detail. Draw out cuts on graph paper and visualize all connectors. Don't forget about the filter. Basically, start planning or start saving.

There are two major reasons I built my tank. (8'X3'X3')

1. I couldn't afford the size I wanted.
2. Even if I could afford it, it would not have fit through the door.

From what I have always heard, other than the custom dimensions thing, it's only worth building when it's over 300 gal. Not sure why though.

Hmm... I see

Haha I forgot about that part that It wouldnt fit my door! If I made the tank and forgot that, I would have to either push it through the balcony or turn it to the side - i think thats right..

craigslist in my area (new york) is usually up to 75 gallons, there is rarely a tank that goes beyond 100. once i searched for 100 gallon tanks, it went into cars.

i have never been on ebay before and dont know how to work it. Yes i know, its shocking but i just know how to do ebay. Like paypal and that kinda stuff.

I like mr.rnger's thinking if u go with DIY go big:naughty: and the classifieds and ebay are great places to look for a tank. I bought all my tanks used with no problems just a few scratches but i can handle that when u get a 125 for 150$ with extra's instead of paying out 500$ used is a good deal in aquariums.

Is this a good deal? I found this on glasscages.com

135 Gal. 72 x 18 x 24 $250
the stand for that is 300
jeez

I'll buy the other stuff seperate.

your best bet is to be paiteint and get used, you'll get alot more for less. When searching craigslist I just use 2 keywords; "fish" and then "aquarium" and search in the general section not just pets. I just searched in NYC and there is a 90g complete for $200. Also you can post yourself just say you are "wanting to buy" I've had very good luck with this method.

as far as building your own I don't think that is good unless you are going MONSTER 400g or more. Or maybe if you need specific demensions.
