A question for the community on goldfish (carp) care.

I have a 125 with an overhead filtration system, a Cascade 1500 with just bio, several sponge filters, a second tank (37G) attached with just an overflow to create airation in the 125g. I had 4 large goldie's (9-10") 2 smaller copper goldies (5") 2 small Channel cats (5-6") and live plants in a refugium with one tiny shebunkin found in a feeder holding tank. Tank was set up and running great for about 5-6 months. I just last week took offline x2 of my sponge filters and put that air to a bubble bar thinking O2 dep.

I say had because over the last 3 weeks I have lost them all. I did have an ammonia spike at the beginning of all this, I do believe was the underlying issue and the reason for the channels. But after 3-4 weeks after this event ( and a few water changes...) with all my water checking out at 0 Ammonia, 0Nitrite, 30ppm Nitrate, PH at 7.2 checked by one of the better LFS's near me(I watched them do these tests to be sure they were following the directions on the chemical bottles...) The only thing left that I never checked was water temp. 75-80* daytime temps in the garage with 65-70 at night.

Tanks are unheated and my Axolotle seems to be strong and healthy (he's in the 37G).

Thoughts and or comments welcome... Temperate water suggested stock list wanted as well... How about some sunfish sources? :-)

Goldfish are pretty darn flexible when it comes to water temperature. 75-80F is no problem at all...65-70°F temps are not a problem either.

Remember...some folks with outdoor ponds leave their goldfish in the pond over the Winter (as long as the tank is deep enough not to completely freeze). And Summer pond temps can get pretty warm as well.

X2.
As long as the temp changes slowly it's not an issue. Just make sure, when it's hot, there's enough aeration
Could have been the ammonia spike.

Cant say much about the cooler temps, but I had some feeder gold fish that survived and grew in my tank that I keep around 8 24/7. One of them lasted for a couple years. The change in temp from 65-75 every day may have stressed them some but they're hardy enough that I wouldnt really suspect temperature as the cause.

I know there area few websites that sell some cool varieties of sunfish that I got off a thread here, unfortunately I no longer remember the thread nor the websites.

Zimmerman's Fish sales is the sight.

Eyeballing a couple Pumpkin seeds or 5, Or I may just make an axolotl tank? But those buggers are pricey!

125g unheated 'desk' for my man cave.
