hey guys...quick question...i was wintering my 2 6" koi in a 75 gallon with 2 pearlscales and a few orandas...everyone got along just fine for the past few months...but two days ago one of the koi started aggressively attacking and eating the scales off of one of the pearlscales.

I assumed it was a female cat fight so I moved the pearlscale to a different tank. then yesterday both koi attacked and ate the bottom fins of the other smaller pearlscale. needless to say i threw the koi into the pond much sooner than i would've liked...but i always thought koi where docile gentile giants...what gives?!?!?

Koi are carp/barbs, and can be quite nippy with slow movingfish. Especially now that breeding season is coming and the males get feisty.

He's only wintering them in the 75 I believe.

right...but it was the female koi attacking the female pearlscale and the following day both koi (male and female) tore the male ps apart...

The koi are 6 inchnes long, how can you be sure of the gender? Forgive my koi ignorance if there's a wasy to tell...

true...it's hard to tell...but just observing their interactions and the "female" has more of a belly then the assumed male which i believe is characteristic of females..."she" grew faster than the male...also...it seems whenever i introduce a "female" to a population...the males go crazy and start sticking their faces in the "female's" bum and chasing them around...and sometimes a new "male" will do that with a fish i already assumed is female...i don't know...i could be completely and totally wrong...::shrug::...

Update: the koi that was aggressive passed away two days after being reintroduced into the pond... :'-(
