Hey all,

I have an alligator and a florida, both ~7". Right now they're in a 30 gal with a 12"X24" footprint.

I'm cycling a 90 gal playpen for my 10" TSN right now, and I'm wondering if it's too soon to give the gars more freedom. If so, at what length should I take them out of the 30?

They'll be fine in the 90 gallon at that size although they might not fare so well with the TSN. You're better off to move the TSN up to an even larger aquarium and put the gars in the 90 gallon by themselves; the alligator gar will most likely outgrow the 90 gallon faster than the Florida gar, so be prepared to move it up again soon. Just remember that you're going to need a pretty substantial aquarium in order to properly house these fishes at their adult sizes; the 90 gallon will not last long for the alligator gar or the TSN.

I'm aware. This winter's project is a custom 6x3x3 (~330 gal?), and an indoor pond is in the works.

Thanks for the help!

Right now you need to put those gars in the 90 gallon
a 30 gallon is way to small for two 7 inch gars.
Even a 90 gallon is pushing it.
i hope you have a 600+ gallon tank waiting for them when they are 16+ inches.
The tsn and gars might not get along but you can never be sure because if the tsn startles a gar it could break the gars back.

Alligator gar - 10 + feet
Florida gar - 3 + feet
Tiger Shovel nose - 4 + feet
Just remember

the gar don't get as big as you think they are or it will take some really long time! an alligator gar that 5 ft long is more than 15 years old and Florida gar usually get about 2 ft in captivity!
I think 90G for 7'' gar is fine for a while!

x2.

Gars that are raised in captivity rarely ever reach the sizes that they could in the wild. The 90 gallon will last for a reasonably long time for the Florida gar for sure; the alligator gar and TSN will most likely outgrow it in no time at all.
