what size would i be able to mix my aro with my cichla in the main tank?
i have an 6x2x2.5 high tank with 100g sump with 2 mono/occel around 14" and 12" on size, and a silver aro around 13".
Currently, the 2 cichla are in the main tank and the silver is in the 50g sized partition in the sump all by himself. all 3 fish are already off live food and eating superworms and anchovies.

i introduced the aro and the smaller cichla in the main tank a few weeks ago on the same day, but the smaller cichla was aready taking nips and bites at him which forced me to move him to my sump and pump feed him. do you think i can reintroduce him in the main tank again?

my other option is to move the smaller cichla to the sump and put the aro with the larger cichla in the main tank. then observe and put back the smaller cichla in the main tank after a few weeks. however, when the aro is in the main tank with the cichla, i wont be able to control feeding as much like how i do it now. he may get fewer fish since he has a cichla as his tankmate already.

of i can just wait a few more weeks til he gets a bit bigger before reintroducing? but the cichla will be bigger than him by then also.

of course this thread will be useless without pics so here ya go :)

tank - dont mind the rock, it keeps the DW from floating

the bitey one

aro in sump

heres a pic where the aro stays in my sump - this was when it housed some african cichlids. its completely covered now to prevent the aro from jumping

Can't say about mixing them, I have never kept Cichla, however you always here about rearranging all the decor when adding new fish, thereby changing the territory of the existing fish a bit when adding new fish. Might be worth a try to move the wood and rocks around. I suppose you could also use a glass or acrylic divider for a while also, so the fish can see and get used to each other.

I introduced my 6" RTG asian arowana to my main tank with two 9" cichla about 2 months back. They were little bit aggressive to the aro on the first day but that is all. Aro is about 8" now and the cichla is about 11". Everything is cool. The tank is 6 X 2.5 X 2 high. Introduce them back again now and monitor for the first few days. Make sure cichla are well fed before introducing so they'll be lazy to move around.

That atowana should be more like 16" to mix with the cichla. Why dont you put the problematic cichla in the sump instead of the arowana. You are aware that the arowana will out grow that tank of yours within a year?

fed the cichla then placed the aro in the main tank, all was well for around 2 days, then the cichla started nipping again at the aro. heard some banging noises on the tank's cover, dont know if it was the cichla or the aro, but the aro looked pretty beat up with some torn fins and bruises. oh well, its back to the sump for the aro :)
