when will i be able to seperate the male from female? i have platys, most are 7 weeks old. and how big do they need to be before i put them in the adult tank?

Males have gonopodium's ;) Google image gonopodium ;)

Females will have an anal fin that is clearly fanish ;) male gonopodium looks like a deformed fin with no fan ;)

More than big enough, to not fit in the biggest fish's mouth. What is the biggest fish you have?

well that wraps it up for sexing them. You can put the juvies in when parents when they are big enough not to get swallowed, simple as that. Just a note on feeding. Livebearers generally have really long intestines and like to eat all the time. It's best to give them several small feedings daily (not to overfeed of course). If you have some constant algae growth in the tank they'll be very happy with that.
