i just put all my fishies in a my 40g and want to turn my 20g into a discus tank. how long would it take from starting the cycling process and ending with putting discus in ??

20g is too small for discus, would only be good to temporarll house a breeding pair. Discus do best in groups and should be kept with 5 or more.

As for the time it takes to cycle the 20g, are you starting it over with a brand new filter? If it had fish before why would it need to be cycled.

Ya 20 way to small for any discus passed 4" i'll say if u want the bare min for a breeding pair id suggest a 30 tall

my 20 is a pretty tall tank and im thinking of getting 5 and than putting it into my 40 gal. im just putting in new water. but the filter is the one i used as my last tank.

I'd get the ph stable with ro water for at least a month before adding fish(you can add tetras etc. to cycle) even with a cycled filter, as long as you didn't dry the filter out.

40g is a little small for 5 discus, which would be a minimum as they like to be kept in groups, you could grow smaller ones out in this tank but you'd need to go bigger if you wanted them to thrive and possibly breed later on

Plan ahead ;-) they'll need it !

I couldn't recommend putting a group of discus in that small a tank. Even small fish. In order to keep them from being stunted, it will require daily large water changes. Small fish are going to require several, high protein feedings daily. As you can see, it will be a nightmare keeping water quality high enough to prevent disease and stunting. I've read many similar stories on the discus forums, where people have added discus to inappropriate tanks, only to later post, "Help, my discus are sick"! :grinno:

You are going to end up stunting your fish if you put them in that small of a tank.
