Hi,

I have a 55 gallon cichlid setup, with two HOBs as my main filtration (also have a few small sponge filters). My question, when and how often should I replace the filter cartridges in my HOB?

As I understand it, the filter cartridges host beneficial bacteria, so they should not be changed too often. On the other hand, the filter collects fish waste, so it holds a bunch of decaying matter (which could increase nitrites, nitrates, etc.). Swishing the filter in tank water does not seem to loosen too much of the waste build up.

So, given the above, when do I know when I should replace the filters? Thanks, and happy holidays!

If you have multiple HOB I would rotate when you change them. That being said when I used them I would change when I saw the flow restricted. Also might not be a bad idea to sneak some media into the chambers to offset the loss of the beneficial bacteria.

Yeah,I'm a repeat rinse guy too when it comes to HoB filter pads.....take em out to the yard and give em a good blast with the water hose!

As you already run separate sponges in the tank, the HOB cartridges are primarily mechanical filtration so you can completely replace those as often as you like. You don't need to worry about losing biological filtration, especially if you have substrate in the tank.
