Question on two of my tanks when will the filter be cultured with bacteria? The tanks have seasoned HOB filters I want them off and change them to fx5's how long will it take for the fx5 to be ok to use so low?

tank 1 a 7ft 210gallon. 19 3inch fish with 2 emperor 400s that have been running it for months. Added a fx5 when can I take the emperors off?
tank 2 a 6ft 180 gallon 2 koi 8inch and 12 inch I think the seasoned filters are a pengin 170? and emperor 400. How long do they stay one with the fx5?

I would say a month to be safe. I'm sure it only has to be on there for a week or two.

You can put the media from your HOB in the FX5 and you should be good to go. But for piece of mind, try adding seachem stability. Im a firm believer in redundancy, and if the bacteria from your HOB doesn't transfer to the canister, at least you have stability as back up.

Here's a good link with lots of info about it. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?324445-Seachem-Stability-PUT-TO-THE-TEST-blank-slate-(daily-perams-pics)&highlight=Seachem+stability

Any move of media will lose 'some' of the original BB. The amount will vary by the type of media and how much agitation there is in the movement. (This assumes that all other things remain constant and you have optimal conditions for temperature, nitrogen readings and pH.)

However, even if you lost 75% of your original BB (an amount that I think is quite high), the BB will double every 12-20 hours. Therefore, at the most, the BB would recover in 2 days. I'd adjust feeding down slightly for a couple days, then just proceed as normal.

takes 8 weeks for zero to fully cultured biomedia ...so i would you're good to go if it the old biomedia can handle the bioload .. just put it in and turn on that FX5
