So I have this big swimming pool in the backyard of a new home that we bought. I've always wanted a big pond for Koi / Catfish.

After years of searching, I know that the best filtration for big fish is bottom drain. The pool has it, but the pipe is on 1.5". I cannot go down there and make it bigger, nor can I bore a 4" hole through the wall to fit a pipe for gravity fed drain.

My only option is to have a bottom drain and plumbing running over the edge of the pool into a settling tank. The issue I have is how to pull that water out of the pool without the solids being mashed up in the process. Here's a diagram that I found online but I don't think it will work.

If I just pump it all out, it will go through the pump propellers and get blended back into the water.

What's the best solution?
