Hi guys, I am traveling to Indonesia for 5 days at the end of this month to check some of the volcanoes there. I have a 2 years old green Iguana, love her to death. I am worried if she would be deeply stressed by my absence. My whole family is traveling and I have many times decided not to travel to be with my iggy girl.. couldn't leave her all by herself. It is a responsibility I have taken.

But this time I just felt guilty declining family's invitation everytime so in the worry I said ok let's book the ticket only to later get all worried about my Iggy girl. My question is how do you guys handle it when you go traveling?

I have a vet nearby I have to check if they will be willing to take care, I am more concerned with whether or not they will be providing proper care. I will have to check on this. I am just sad for my Iggy:(

I don't have an iguana, but I do have 3 cats and a dog who are all on special foods/medications, and a rabbit, as well as my hundred or so fish, and I hire a petsitter. It can take a while to find one who is licensed, bonded, and insured, but I have used the one I found a lot now. Ask the questions you feel you need to ask, and if they don't answer them to your satisfaction, move on to the next. Find one you can trust and you can even call them daily to check up on your pet. It will provide peace of mind.

Edit: And your trip sounds amazing, by the way!

No matter what you think, that Iguana doesn't like and/or need you. Just turn the lights off, or get a timer. Give it a big water bowl and go..........look at it like you're giving the Iguana a vacation......

Put at least a 1 or 2 days supply of food into separate zip lock bags. Get some one to stop in 2 or 3 times while you are gone to clean out the water dish, make sure the lights are as they should be and dump in a bag of food. While you feed her daily, she doesn't HAVE to eat daily. She can go these two weeks with minimal care if she is healthy, and it sounds as though she is.

Her enclosure will be pretty gross when you get back, but she will be fine.

I agree. Iguanas are not like cats and dogs. They aren't social creatures and she won't even notice you're gone. Just have someone stop by and feed her every other day and she'll do fine. Have a good vacation and enjoy yourself.

Sometimes it's more for peace of mind for the owner than the needs of the animal!

Good ideas guys, I will definitely think about this. But I beg to differ on the part that my Iggy doesn't like me :( lol I read about from many advanced Iguana keepers that Iguana are similar to parrots where they get depressed when their owners are away. I don't know about those who keep their Iguana caged or in an aquarium sitting there all day and night. My Iguana is free in my room and gets natural sunlight and I love interracting with her... to me it's all about bonding. My mom has told me about how my Iggy comes out when I'm not around and walks around as if looking for me and messing things up in my room as if she is stressed.

Perhaps it is not me but just a change in her daily routine ( getting used to my presence ) that stresses her. But she is close to me and comfortable with me compared to anyone else. If I slept too long she would climb on top of me to wake me up and to take her to potty and feed her. I'm not kidding.. and she lays on me or in my arms and goes to sleep also. If this isn't liking me ( at least from the perspective or capability of an Iguana ) then I don't know what liking is. Thanks for the ideas, I will let you know what I come up with.:)

Hehe I remember that video, love those Tegus. They even ignore the food and go after him. How so cute.. the B & W Argentine Tegu is one of my favourites. I tried to adopt one but I was scammed. Yea.. maybe one day. I read their I.Q is like that of a cat.

Oh and I got to say, if I do the "come here" motion to my Igu she does come to me! Iguanas are really smart, they should be taught things to stimulate their mind.
