When you guys do a water change, do you turn off your canister filters? I just had an issue with my fx5 spitting out fish waste from the canister and wanted to make sure that does not happen again. Let me know what you guys do when you guys do a wc. Thanks in advance!

When you turn ur "canister" filter back on, does it spew a cloud of brown particles?

I turn mine off. I have never had it spit out anything when turning it back on, not sure why it would have done that.

You arent cleaning that filter out enough if theres visible sludge in the piping as you turn it on. Clean your pads more!

A little bit of crud from the pipes is normal with filters that have been running a long time (you could try clean the inside of the pipes but I have never bothered), but if its spewing out more than that then you probably should clean it out more often. Dirty canister filters are an accident waiting to happen. Power goes off for a couple of hours, water in canisters full of muck turns toxic, power comes back on and canister spews toxic stagnant water back into tank...

I agree, I think it's a buildup of waste at the bottom of your canister that is settling when unplugged....then jettisoned back out once it's kicked on. Just rinse out your canister more often and/or change the media. I do mine about every 6 weeks...seems frequent enough, but it depends on your bioload.

My canisters never spew out fish crap. You need to clean your canister or add a prefilter so it would not clog so fast.

My Rena xp4 spits out when turned off then turned back on. I change my filter once every 2 months at least, I aim for once a month though. I don't find the filter spitting out as much of a problem though since I vacuum the gravel every water change (every week). I turn everything off except the lights.
