Can you grow Amazon swords in a gravel substrate? Also what kind of lighting and output do you need, any input is greatly appreciated.

i have no experience with swords, but i guess the easy answer is anything is possible if you dose your tank with the right nutrients and give the plant correct lighting etc...

Only problem is you may find it won't grow as nicely as opposed to if it was kept in a tank with a aquatic soil substrate...

Yes they can grow well in gravel. I would add root fertilizer tabs if you don't have a plant specific substrate. They need at least low-medium light to do well but can grow in low light conditions. I would add a carbon supplement like flourish excel as well a basic water column fertilizer.

the better question is your piranha safe for the plant... MY P's tank they LOVE to rip the plants out
im talking about da plant growing chemical, i have amazon swords in there now an they have been n there for some months now and i have never put anything n there to help them grow, they[piranha] dont bother them at all.

The root tabs won't hurt your fish. If you added DIY co2 the swords will grow much taller leaves and it would lower the ph for your pirahna
