A fish which literally enjoys turbulent, high oxygen cooler water and grows to over six feet in length, getting one to over half its adult size is a challenge and it doesn’t take much at all to lose one………… trust me, I know!
My fish room is being gradually moved away from warm-water, "tropical" fish...providing the desired cooler water is a snap, easier than providing warmth for more commonly kept species...
Aeration and circulation is not a problem...have more pumps and more air capacity than I will ever use...
My main concern, aside from the fact that these seem to be problematic even for much more experienced keepers than me...is the fact that my largest tank is 360 gallons. Not building any bigger ones, no space, not allowing the hobby to overrun my life (as it has once or twice in the past...). So I need to find one of the smaller goonch species; considering that I have never even seen one of any species...and that I can't likely find one to order online from elsewhere in Canada...and that even identifying some individuals as to species seems to be a challenge...the odds of my getting one are not good...
...but not necessarily insurmountable, of course...
I was cruising around the website of an online retailer located a few provinces over from me...i.e. a long ways!...and there they are: goonch! B.yarelli, to be specific...at least according to them. Apparently this is one of the big guys? Thank goodness! Pressure relieved...
I think this is true for any fish that grows over 3 feet, for many reasons. Certainly on MFK we don't get to see them except once in a blue moon. But the large goonch species indeed are some of the least likely to be grown to over 3 ft successfully.
