where are alligators legal as pets?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know exactly which states that allow for one to legally keep an American alligator without a permit, but I do know that you're more likely to have good luck in a northern state rather than a southern state (with New York being an exception). You're also going to want to check the local laws as well.

Pennsylvania does not require a license or permit statewide HOWEVER, many localities do. Also, PA currently has a potential ban on the table and hopefully will not pass.

I know here where I live salem oregon our mall had a pet store named scamps wich have all gone out of buissnes up in the north west for animal crualty…use to sell aligators ever since then I've never seen any here so who knows

I'm not going to do a state-by-state check. However, here's a reference for Louisiana:

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – State of Louisiana

Alligator Regulations

I. Possession
I. d. No person other than a licensed alligator farmer or licensed nongame quadruped exhibitor shall possess live alligators at any time other than by a permit issued by the department upon request for use in displays and educational purposes, and by holders of valid department issued permits for scientific purposes. Live, farm raised alligators and their accompanying alligator hide tags may be held for processing by a properly licensed alligator skinning facility without a license or permit. Violation of this Subparagraph is a Class Four violation as described in Title 56.

The reptile part was removed from the pending exotics ban based on the draft that I read.

What else do you know about this proposed ban?....It seems that there are already enough laws in place to keep us from acquiring exotics in this state...If you don't mind, post on a new thread as I don't want to derail this one?

On top of what ryan said, no localitie has a permit I believe. Plus most localities have no laws against them. Only a small handful do(philthy, pitt etc).

Many of your large cities have some sort of vague or even direct rules on the books against "Nuisance" animals. They will be enforced as whatever official chooses which is even more scary to me than a blatant one on the books.

In the area I live, farm animals can not be kept within a residence. I know that exemptions were made to allow people to harbor the animals for months while homes were eventually found. It does happen.

Please send me info on where to read this revisioned ban draft please. The last I heard there were officials who pulled their support for it, but I haven't heard anything about any changes to it.

Did a little reading on this and it seems that the Pa.House of Representatives has passed bill H.B.1398 banning private possession of dangerous exotic animals....It is now up to the Pa.Senate to pass the bill.
