For many of us the hobby is ever evolving. We try new filtration, lighting, tanks sizes, dedicated species tanks, communities, etc. Some of us do it on the fly, while others plan and some do it in a combination of both.

Myself I'd like to try and revamp a lot of how I handle the hobby. I've always bought fish with no real plan. Communities where just thrown together with little thought other then after the fact trying to make sure they didn't kill each other. Since I'd like to try breeding some fish that have never been bred I want to plan things out better.

Fitration: With a biological efficacy rivaled by fuidised beds and wet/dry trickle filters, yet requiring little initial, running and maintenance costs as well as requiring little cleaning; I'd like to try the Hamburg-Matten Filter. It's very popular in Germany, favored by breeders and hobbyists who maintain a large number of tanks in dedicated fishrooms for the reasons stated above. So I figured why not try it myself.

Stock Focus: Crenicichla: An often underappreciated IMO Genus these guys have a lot to offer anyone looking to challenge themselves. Between their aggression and predatory nature they're a challenge just to house never mind the fact that most have never been bred in the home aquaria.

Plants: I'd also like to finally try adding live plants to my tanks. Though I'd like to try floating plants such as amazon frog bit and water lettuce. I'd like to be able to confine how much of the surface they cover though. This way they could keep the back of the tank dark to help fish feel more secure when hiding as well as help add contrast for picture taking.

I could go on but this post is long enough as is. So for those who do think about the future what are your plans for the hobby? You can be as detailed or brief as you want, just let us know where your planning to take the hobby.

The hobby for me is getting smaller and smaller, not in the enthusiasm sense; but in terms of tank size. I'm enjoying the challenge, precision, simplicity and sometimes ease of the smaller bodies of water now.

I also want to focus more on breeding Betta's, as it has only really been brief forays into it before

nice post, I change the water, do my tank maintenance and filter maint and let the fish decorate as they please. They never like what I have in mind.

I'm just cruising right now. I just added a 75 gallon to my collection of tanks. I'm at 5 right now (150, 135, 75, 55, 20long) which is pretty much at my limit as far as time for maintenance, water changes, etc. Any more would be too much work. I work long hours during the week so weekends are precious. Problem is I've been wanting an archer fish tank real bad. So, I am planning that for the future when one of my current tanks opens up. I love all the stock I have now and don't really want to change anything. But I'm really looking forward to setting a tank up for archers.

it is a balance. if the line is crossed between, it being work, or a hobby that you enjoy doing, the fish, you and your family will suffer.

Truer words never spoken. Have often had times when ive felt overwhelmed in the hobby with responsibility and time constraints, tends to evolve though with how I feel

about 2 years ago I down sized, I had 5 tanks, non smaller that 75g, and was bugging me. I am happy with the 180, the 145, and 95 g now,

Due to health reasons, I've sold off or given away over 120 tanks. I have about 2 dozen tanks left and am focusing now on breeding wakin goldfish. There are not many sources for this variety so, I'm going to see if I can make a dent in the market.

We also set up a few small moss tanks to breed FW spider crabs.

I'm close to convincing my wife to let me set the 650 back up for a pair of mbu puffers just so I can have a large food bill again since our boy left to serve in the Army.

I've tried a few different planted tanks. It's something I've always wanted to do but have failed miserably haha my current tank is surviving but I'm not happy with it.

Anyways, I really want to venture into dwarf can't cichlids. American or African. But I have zero experience with those guys and would like to give them a shot.
