ok so my lfs cant really order in something they dont know exists so where can i get one? like which vendors or websites? all i can find are vampire tetras? which say hydroclynus(or however its spelled) sp. so where can i get a tat? or raph? payara? also what can i expect to pay for one? i know armatus can be pricey but is that the same with raphs and tats? thnx i am a total newbie to characins, other then the many tetras i have fed to my fish.

Pets N Such in West Valley has H. armatus right now. That's about your best bet because normally IF Utah stores even order any it's usually H. scomberoides when they come in.

really? but can i put an armatus in with my cichlids(2 firemouths, 2 jack dempseys, 1 blood parrot, 1 nicaraguan, 3 sajicas, 1 ornate pim catfish) in my 125? i thought armatus got huge?

I wouldn't mix payara with cichlids.

A raph would definitely hurt himself in a 125. Mine was highly claustrophobic and even with twice his length in turning space, he started rubbing his nose on the glass to the point he lost his teeth and rubbed it so far they couldn't grow back. Tats generally need only twice their length in turning space making them most ideal for aquariums. However I have heard many stories of them being skittish for a while and cichlids would definitely eat all the feeders first and terrorize the fish. Scombs can live two years (longer than a raph would live in a 125) if you keep the water super clean.

Armatus get huge and I imagine it would kill your fish.

oh...ok then i guess no payara, untill i can buy another tank, just for him...

I wouldn't say payara are totally incompatible. I have mine in a tank with a YT barracuda, juruense catfish, nandus nandus, midnight catfish and spotted raphael.

Virtually any non aggressive fish (either predator or not) who isn't small enough to be eaten would work great with payara. Just remember that predator does not mean aggressive all the time.

How big is your tank?

My tank is only a 40br right now. The tat and falcirostris are only 6" right now. The rest are a bit smaller.

I am planning on a 180 or larger. If I don't have room by then I will get a 120 :(.

I am religious about water changes on this tank though :headbang2

Seems like a nice collection. Just a bit overcrowded.
