Where can I buy turquoise severums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's going to be hard to identify them as juveniles because they all look the same. Most LFS will mislabel greens as turquoise depending on what supplier they get them from, but they're almost always greens. The other problem is that some people feel the turquoise are the same as greens, and some people classify them as two separate species.

The turquoise severums tend to come from Peru, along with the rotkiels, so you may have to find a reputable source importing from Peru. Jeff Rapps has them on his stocklist right now.

what's the growth rate on those sevs?

You can usually have them full grown (8 - 10") in two years. It's going to vary a lot based on several factors (tank size, water change schedule, amount and type of food, etc.) but it's not uncommon for them to take more than a year to really put on size.

Excellent! Thank you very much!! I am so excited to get these fish. Just another 3-4 weeks and I will have a fully cycled 135 gallon tank. I hope Jeff still has them in stock. But if not, at least I know where to find them now!

I picked up 5 wild juvies of H. appendiculatus "Peru" (Turquoise sevs) at the ACA convention about 3-4 years ago and now have 2 breeding pairs.

If Rapps is out of them when you need them, let me know. I have a few 2-3"-ers growing out that haven't already been promised.

Matt

PS As an aside, just get some filter material or a filter from a cycled tank...and your 135g will be "cycled"...

Matt, please pm me, I am interested as well, I lost my severum this past year and been trying to find a replacement.
