in NY waiting to get cancer
my lfs recently got a permit to sell piranhas and they told me i need a license to buy one. i have a 55gallon tank set up and now i just need a license to get a few of those little bastards. where am i supposed to get a piranha license and is there an age requirement? im only 15years old but i'm experienced with fish. the piranhas are only 3inch long so i figured i can have them in a 55 for now.

I don't know about that you might want to ask someone who knows the law locally.[...] They aren't as bold (rbp) as they are made out to be. Do some research they produce a lot of waste and such. But I don't mean to sound discouraging I love Piranha. They are great fish. Just be sure you are prepared to keep them their whole lives and or get them good homes. Others didn't and that is why you are running into this permit crap to begin with. Good luck

Hi there. I am also in New York and I would advice you to call the Wildlife and Conservation part of our state government. They could tell you who to contact. As long as your knowlegable on the fish, I don't see why they would prohibit you. I think there is a fee though.

If your talking about pygocentrus piranhas just be aware that they'll outgrow a 55g in about a year....

They are illegal in NY. It is also illegal to keep native species because they changed the law where it is illegal to transport species across the state. Some spread of desease issue. When i talked to a state rep last week i asked them if i could get a permit to keep native species and order them. They wouldn't give me a straight answer.
What did i expect, this state sucks, when it comes to fishing and hunting regulations, especially for the cost to do them. Every year i get Doe licenses for around Ny city, long island, etc.. , even though i live on the west side of the state hundreds of miles away. Gotta love it. :)
