So, i was sitting here online looking at all the posts and different topics on the MFK Forum and thought to myself, at what point did my interest begin in this hobby? not only was its a flash back from 20+ yrs ago, but it was also a reminder that i myself have always been hard headed and even when warned of the possible outcome never thought it would happen to me.

that being said, ill make it a brief and summed up flash back to my obsessions beginnings..
i was maybe 5-6 and my mother bein a teacher often kept a small fish tank in her room, me and my younger brother often finding ourselves "hand fishing" in it after school. idk why but it was so fascinating to play with the fish and time and time again i was warned of the dangers with electrocution and whatnot. well long story shart, as i previously stated, it happend, the light became loose and i tried to pull my arm out fast enough but it just wasnt possible to beat it of course.. so overnight in a hospital with all sorts of testing and meds, not to mention the burn like marks up my arm, i was in recovery. I still to this day dont know why, but for some reason, i cant get enough. I love anything to do with the hobby and will till im taken from my home tooth and nail to the nursing home!

so does anyone else out there have a story like this that got them goin or am i just a lil off my rocker with my own variety of FISHUES?? :screwy: and even if its not a crazy story im still interested in how everyone got started, its always fascinating to see. i just hope this gets some replays lol

My story is not as funny or as interesting as yours but here goes...

When I was younger we always had fish growing up, nothing special just some of your common goldfish, which I always enjoyed having. I lived in FL about 2 yrs ago and I really got into fishing while I lived there. All I wanted to do after work was fish, fish and fish some more. Until one day I decided why not buy a tank and buy some cichlids.. Now that I live in Italy and can no longer go fishing everyday, my obsession for fish keeping has grown. I now have 4 tanks 2 are currently empty, one 72 Gal Malawi tank, and the other is a 28 Gal nano reef in the making.. I had to go salt because I can no longer spend countless hours fishing in the Ocean..

yea i fully understand the obsession as i live here in a truly fishing oriented town. i also deckhand and sale charters for a seasonal job. idk how i would react if i couldn't fish like i do..i think i might just go truly crazy. im glad you posted i was beginning to think i might not get any responses lol, after all its my first thread started on my own

Started my obsession with bichirs back when I was about 14 years old. Before that I kept FH as they were popular back then for predicting lottery numbers (They have this little balls with numbers placed in a fish tank and the FH would suck it and spit it out and we would record the number). I had a senegal in a 10 gallon back then with just a simple corner filter (I was ignorant about the fish size as well as purpose of filtration). Needless to say, that poor fish died just after a month.

Quitted the fish keeping hobby until when I was 18. Did my research on bichirs and got myself a 70 gallon tank for them as well as a FX5. After keeping 3 of my senegals healthy and in good condition, I got the confident to venture into more expensive species such as delhezi and ornate.

Now i have 5 bichirs happily living in my tank and im please to say I don't torture fishes by stuffing them into a 10 gallon anymore. Hope they grow to live about 8-10 years.

I didn't even realize you lived there. I lived in Ft. Walton Beach for about 4 years. I miss it like crazy. You must do some good fishing if your a deckhand as well, I mainly fished off of piers, docks and such.. Do to the lack of owning a boat. The few times I did get out on them was great though..
