Where did they get the name "Oscar"?

With many of the other fish species their common names seem to have some kind of logical link the the observed animal but I just don't see it with the Oscar. How do you get Oscar from Astronotus ocellatus ? It does not even refer to the name of the person who first described them, Louis Agassiz. Any ideas or words of wisdom on this out there?
 
The word oscar is derived from the Irish language and means deer friend. Someone a long time ago must have associated the friendliness of the oscar and named it accordingly.
 
That is the best explanation I have heard so far. I am going with that.
 
If you say "ocellatus" enough is starts to sound like "Oscar".
