Ok it came to me today, well the otherday actualy but i though i was loosing the plt LOL, so does the wife LOL

Now some mite have seen i am planning a monster tank build for my rays and aro`s etc, as i have just built a conservatory i though it would look good on the side of that looking into it.

Now that tank can be 12x6x4 max, now i would like it deeper than 6 foot (front to back)......

So we have a large garden, well it is to me of some near 50 foot square, now we cant build ON it as the planning regs are well yo put it nicely, rubbish around here, but why not below ground:), i still need to look into the regulations for this but i am sure i can do this without much fuss from the local council or building regs.

The plan is a 20 x 20 x 7 tank room for the tank of 15 x 10 x 4, maybe 5 high. The rest filter room, seating area and bar LOL.
All this under ground, completely, with the roof still used as the garden, maybe wood decking or paving, if i go higher than 12inch i will need planing permision to use the roof of it for anything except a planting area.

All these are rough sizes but i have the room to do this.

So thats another idea by me, and a way to make use of the garden we have and have a bigger tank.

One thing, when you go to this size tank what would the running cost be like? i love my fish and always wanted a monster tank but there are limits to some of my funds to my hobbys.

The only problems that jump out at me are:

1. Will they zone the underground room around the aquarium as living space? If so, you'll still get stuck with dealing with the same zoning and regulations.

2. Drainage for the garden. Where will the water go when it rains and can't drain through the roof of the aquarium/room?

3. Nutrient supply for the garden. If you're only going to have 12" of soil to plant in, then you're going to have to fertilize heavily.

4.Roof reinforcement? with only 12" of dirt, will the roots of the plants be breaking through and creating leaks/weak points in the ceiling?

its a good idea wayne but i cant see them passing it as there is more then meets the eye when building. also the cost to run something like that you will have to take on another job. if there is a limit with funds this is not the way to go. all the best mate

Always is more to it hey mate, i can afford to build it but now i have worked out the running cost of around £140 per week, i see where you suggest getting another job to run it LOL.

Oh i have just woke up......what a dream LOL

I think the mosr expensive part is the pumps on large tanks, above 1000g say, for a good size pump around 3500g they take around 1kw which works out at over a year around £1000 to run, and on a 1000g tank with a 6000gph turnover theres 2kw already and £2000 pump alone.

Unles i am wrong but its what i ahve reasearched.

Same gallon as mine that, but 10x6x4, i have been looking at swimming pool heaters but worked out i need a 3kw, how did you work out yout watts?
I tryed to work out how much the heaters will use but its not easy as they are not continuasley on and it all depends on the air temp in the tank room. Which of i will be keeping heated also by propane heater as i can get the gas from work, the only perk i have.

Thanks for the pump offer mate, i have a 3500gph external pond pump and will need another of similar for mine.
