Where do I start?

Do you want a big tank, small tank, tall tank, wide tank?
- Small fish
- Aggressive fish
- Big peacefulfish
- Weird lookin fish

Explain what you''re trying to go for exactly...

Start with a big tank at least a 55. If you buy small you will eventually buy big it will save you alot $ to start big trust me.

What kind of fish do you want to keep?

Yes .. what do you like? Start there. :) I would look around on the forums in all of the subforum sections on the different types of fish, and then look at the stickys for care info.

def start with atleast a 55gal, its really big but will give u a lot more options to start with. as for fish that just depends on what u like, tell us what u have in mind and we will gladly help u out

I'd start at your local fish store. You should look around, and get a list of different fish you like. Then you can ask at the store for their opinion, and then come here and let us know and we could also help you out.

The tank size you should start with all depends on what kind of fish you get, how often you plan on cleaning it and if you want to try your hand at live plants or not.

There are different ways to do this; one is to buy the tank and find what fish can live in it or the other is to look at fish you like and find what size tank is needed for them. Either way is fine but you started on the right track by doing your research first.

I would also start by considering where you are going to place your tank, consider the maximum size that will fit the area, the weight requirements-if this is going upstairs for example, will it get sunlight? this can make the hobby difficult dealing with algae issues.

Also think about what will your budget allow? How much will it initially cost to set up and also to maintain, including electrical and water.

All depends on what you want to get out of the tank. I would start bigger, if you do get into it you will keep going bigger and bigger anyway. All depends on the kind of fish you prefer and what you want the tank to look like. Good luck and have fun with it.
