Im setting up a 75 soon and trying to figure out where to get some rooty lookin branches to put in so fish can swim under and through. I have gone to the river and just found some single branches before, but I want to get some that are all together and attached so it looks like exposed tree roots. Where does everyone get such good lookin pieces? (Not looking for location-specific answers)...

+1 i want to know as well and how do you treat it before putting it into the tank? i as well am in the process of setting up an 300 gallon native tank and want to do the same thing?

If you can't find a single piece, I've seen people with planted tanks literally screw pieces of wood together to create a larger piece mimic the look of a trees root systems before, and i've also seen people who just stack them creatively to produce the same effect...

Screwing them together seems like a solid idea. Just gotta be selective about our pieces i guess. as far as treating large lumber goes, how do you do it? ive boiled half a stick on the tove before, but that only works to about a 2 foot stick (half in a bog pot at a time)...

I'm trying to figure this out too. What I have picked up is that you need a hard wood stump, you power wash it clean, you submerge it and soak it for weeks then leave it out to dry and harden. That's the best I can figure. I noticed a guy named David did it on his custom 2000L thread. Unfortunately he lives in Australia or New Zealand so the trees he uses aren't native to the U.S.. If you find out a specific hard wood to use let me know please. Good luck.

I think im just gonna have to dig up a little manzanita somewhere! seems like a pretty common species. most of the "burlwoods" would probably work fine though im guessing

I find wood pieces while walking on the shore, like the one below.
It was originally a 6'-8' log (very heavy), that had to have about 4.5' removed to save the part I wanted.

After cutting it, I soaked the desired piece in a rain barrel for a few months to make sure any parasites hatched out and/or died, and that it was totally water logged before adding it to a tank.
Soaking also will help get rid of tannins that can leach a brown tint to tank water.

Awesome root, duanes. I found a great source through a guy I know that does taxidermy. He has a huge pile of all sizes
in back of his shop. He told me that there's a guy with a whole truckful that comes through every so often. That same guy has a route through this area and he also stops by the local pet/fish stores. Maybe you have a guy in your area too...
