I've seen a few threads in the photo forums where people have red sand for their bichirs. What type of sand is that and where did you find it?
I've read here that that color sand brings out the best colors in bichirs and I want to get some of that too.

I got my garnet sand from Julian, the contrast and color on my lapradei has never been better. Makes the endlis look really good too.

I'm curious about the garnet sand as well. This is the stuff used for sandblasting, etc., yes? Is there a particular brand that anyone could recommend? Or is it all essentially the same?

Yes it's the stuff used for sand blasting. There are different types with varying levels of minerals. Each manufacturer (and source of the garnet stones) is potentially different, but most should be okay for aquarium use.

Thanks. Think I'll check it out. I've also seen a product called Starblast, which is more of a brownish looking sand. Anyone use that?

do most polypterus really look better on red over black?

I would really like to see your tank with red sand. I am debating what to fill mine with.

yesterday i ordered from specteraquartz, f grade red, 50lbs bag for 9.99 plus shipping!

i just ordered by phone, it was pretty easy. i'll only be needing about 20 lbs of it or so and will be selling the rest when i get it. let me know if you're interested.

Hay if you are putting that in an up and running tank make sure to turn off all your pumps, this stuff takes a wail to settle,i would also rinse it
