Where do you guys learn to ID?

College, interaction with experts in the field of taxonomy, and repeated practice. And they still just look like silvery fish sometimes...
Hands on always works for me. It's pretty much the "process of elimination" (for me) when it comes to bass. And reading a lot helps too.
You could check out the stickie at the top of the section.
This is a fishing site it it has great information about identification for various species of cichla. Look to the left column it has a list of species, with information and Id for each one. This is a good start. Time and experience will take care of the rest. Hth.
