Why not buy off brand cheap mechanical media and either cut to size or stuff it in there? That's the biggest perk to canister, custom filter options.

Would this work >?? I mean I really like how filthy my other one was it obviously did its job since it was so darn filthy right ?

Absolutely. Load it up, starting with coarser foam first, followed by finer foam, biological media, and cap it off with some micro-filtration.

Thanks for the help I went and ordered the eheim ones because of how well this other pad worked. It literally looked like a muddy door mat after 2 months

I always use the store brand - much cheaper and basically the same thing. If yours was clogged after just two months you may want to think about either a pre-filter on your intake, or a larger volume canister.

Great advice! Pre-Filter with a sponge over the strainer seems like the most cost effective method.

This is the method I prefer.

hmm I want to go bigger than a 2217 if I am going to upgrade. How would a 2080 do ? Or an FX5 I already have the FX5(could always order another right) waiting for my 400+ to finish planning.

Howdy,

Depends on what size tank...

I recommend against the 2080 - simply search this forum for my user name and 2080 and you'll know more. A second 2217 might be best and cheapest (I'd say up to 75 gal), or 2250/60/62 would be upgrades for larger tanks.

Good luck,
HarleyK
