So, I was thinking about buying astaxanthin on ebay, except all I can find are human supplements.

Is there a list of stuff that's harmful to fish so that if I see them in the ingredients I won't buy it?

Or does someone know a reliable website that sells bags of powdered astaxanthin?

alot of pelleted/granulated food have it in already so there is no need to add your own. but if you know that and are trying to make your own food then look at discus specialists, particularly stores that deal in food additives. a uk discus shop stocks a food additive called NatuRose that contains astaxanthin so i would imagine US discus specialists would stock it or something similar as well.

naturose is the trade name, he offers it in "bulk" as well

Do you think I should make my own food for my fish and mix in the astaxanthin or just buy bulk food that contains it once he gets it in a bigger size?

I like to make my own foods so that I can target different fish's needs specifically. I also do feed some pre-made pelleted foods as well.

Just a FYI - the makers of Naturose astaxanthin (Cyanotech Corp.) have not been producing or selling that ingredient for animal feed since March 2008. According to Cyanotech, under ideal storage temps its shelf life is less than 1 year. Do the math.
