Hi

i have a jewel vision 450 litre tank that has the following inhabitants

1 x 9 inch female jag
1 x 10 inch oscar
1 x 7 inch green terror
1 x 5 inch salvini
1 x large plec.

filtration is an FX5

would sand be an option with my cichlids plus FX5 ????

if so where can i buy cheap white sand in the uk

thanks mark

Just don't stir up the sand while the FX5 is operating at all. And keep the intake several inches higher than normal is my recommendation.

I've bought and replaced 3 impellars for one of my FX5's when i had sand in the tank it was on. 80$ each.

I've nearly ruined several impellers with sand and a thing I found to have worked well is to put a sponge pre-filter over the intakes. It diffuses the suction so that sand can't get sucked directly up the intake.

Agree with the prefilter idea.

I got my sand for my 500l from argos, its 3 quid for 15kg but not all their shops stock it so it's worth ringing in advance (although it is the right time of the year for it). Think I used 2 maybe 3 bags to cover it with around an inch or two of sand.

The Argos one is quite pale if I rember right.

Not only the impellers but white sand = nasty Algae on the sand. I too have damaged pumps with sand. think I will start using direct drive pumps on all sand tanks.
