Who is the best supplier of native fish?

After much consideration, I have decided on doing common native New York species in my new tank....

As stated, I have a private pond in which to put anything that outgrows my 125 setup....

I am going to start cycling my tank any day and put together the finishing touches.....I have driftwood soaking ect.

I want to do something with LM or SM bass, Crappie, Chain Pickeral or Northern Pike (poss. Muskie), Perch ect. NOT ALL AT ONCE

When the Bass/Esox outgrow I will keep the remaining fish...

Who is the best source for these kind of fish?? I have come across a few, but nobody seems to carry a WIDE variety.....I am not interested in fancy/rare shiners ect. I want they typical local lake setup

WHOS THE BEST??

me im the best source just look at my albums my first tank had 3 diffent types of sunnies-blue gills/lm bass/sm bass/yellow perch/wh perch/pickeral/rock bass wanted black crappie but bass fishing picked so got tired of fishing for tank size fish just see pics and pm me

wow your ignored my advice about getting big sportfish instead of try out smaller species...not cool.

Not against buying fish, as i do that a lot for things i cant get myself closeby, but have you tried catching some of your own?? I dont know what your local laws are, but i do know its lots of fun to get out and see what you can come up with either by net or hook and line. Check your local laws

:shakehead :nono::duh: Thats silly to even try a Northern in a 125 Hope you have a BIG pond in a few months when its eaten or killed all its tankmates in the 125. Northern pike have to be the Worst native to buy for a typical home aquarium.

None of them are suitable for 125gal. Northern pike, muskie and smallmouth bass aint really suited for pond life. Same said for trout, sauger and walleye.

If you cant keep them forever then do not get them, simple.:screwy:

Whats wrong with Grass and Redfin pickerel? They reach only 8 to 14 inch long.

Smallmouth bass are very aggressive toward any fish and will kill them.
Largemouth bass are most abused native fish because too many people kept them in small tanks and Im against these people.

Again whats wrong with Redeye, Suwanee and Guadalupe bass? All of them are smaller bass species thats rarely reach 15 inch long.

Esox species are better off in species tank only as they will eat their tankmates. Esox and Bass are not good combo as bass are aggressive and will eat all food before esox have a chance to grab a lunch.

Northern Pike and Chain Pickerel will eat every tankmate and pondmates

Muskie, are you kidding me? no fish will prey on fullgrown muskie and theres endless list about which fish species muskie will eat. Dont get Tiger muskie, they grow up too fast and highly aggressive because they are hatchery strains.

After chunking these tankbusters in your pond, whats point to have them in the pond as pets if you cant see them?:screwy: I just dont understand you...

Sorry for ignoring you MN Rebel....Or is it Dr. Rebel? Officer Rebel?

I understand your points about the bigger fish and my small tank...
I haven't decided completely what I want to do with regards to stocking my tank, I DO know that I want only COMMON native species.....

Flaming me before I even stock the tank is not going to keep me from doing what I want......I have explained that I have provisions for dealing with the fish when they outgrow my situation.....I may even upgrade tanks if I feel the desire....

You also keep telling me that its a bad idea to put the fish in a pond becasue I will never see them again.....Seems to me like a rather immature thought process.....I'll be able to handle it when the "FISHY GO BYE BYE" thanks!!

And lastly, the fish you keep touting as the perfect LMB substitution is the Red Eye Bass....I have agreed its an awesome fish, and would be perfect for my situation, except for the fact that the last 2 or 3 posts says they are unavailable PERIOD....

From now on I'll go it on my own and lurk for ideas rather than post....Later!

I would listen to MN rebel, and he is not flaming you he is trying to help. When i first got my basss even before i joined this site i had the same thinking as you ill just raise them and release them. But i got attached and now ill have to make a hard decission in a few years to build a plywood tank buy a big pool or give them to the local Bass Pro shops. Hopefully it will take them a few years to reach 3-4.5 pounds. After there gone or moved i will go with a pickerel, bullhead, a small black bass and maybe a few sunfish or a crappie :D.
