The time has come for me to get a larger tank, maybe an 8 footer. As many of you know I have a 125 gallon tank and I want something larger, where should I look for a monster tank because it seems like 125g is the largest I generally see around.

Thanks

I imagine you're going to have trouble finding a bigger thank than the 125. There's not much water on Tatooine and that's something of a luxury item, I'd imagine there's not much of a market for them.

Seriously though, try Craigslist. It's not unusual for 240-300 gallon setups to sell for less than $500; sometimes much less. One must be patient and save their money so that when the right deal presents itself, you're in a position to act. After all, good luck is nothing more than the meeting of preparation and opportunity. More locally oriented sites like bookoo.com are a good resource.

It's better IMO to buy a used tank. For the cost of a new 55, you can easily get your 8' tank.

^^ agreed. My 300 was a custom build because I needed specific dimensions for the area in question, and wanted particular plumbing, but most of my other tanks are Craigslist tanks. Steals lol

8 footers come up all the time around the $500-1000 range where I live. Maybe not every day but usually every week or so.

If all else fails building a DIY plywood tank is really good and easier then you think... And the big plus is that you can make it the EXACT size you want down to the inches...

X2 for craigslist

Second hand is cheaper, downsides are that it takes ages (sometimes never) to find what you're looking for, there's no guarantees about quality, and you'll most likely end up compromising one way or another.

The answer really depends what you're looking for, if it is just a standard 8x2x2' you'll most likely be able to find one. If you're after something wider (8x3 or 8x4) you will probably be looking longer. Do you want it drilled? What sort of stand do you want? There's a heck of a lot to consider with a tank this size, and although a new tank may be more expensive, having everything done the way that suits you for the next decade or two (or however long you plan on having the tank) will often make that well worth the extra cash.

DIY is certainly worth considering too.

I just got a 360 marine set up plus all the bells and whistles in equipment for 500 from Craigslist, it cost more to move it then to buy it............. so keep looking!

You may have gotten the only good deal to ever hit Chicago's craigslist, every time I look half the people are asking more than new or are selling junk.

Second hand is best for fishrooms where aesthetics aren't as important as your living room or if you don't care if it takes a year or 2 to find what you want, especially in smaller markets.

Never priced plywood or concrete but for diy glass or acrylic the materials where so close to the custom built price it isn't worth my time or forfeiting a warranty to give it a try.

I'm hopeful on upgrading my 125 this fall and found midwest custom aquariums and innovative plastics to have great reputations, easy to deal with and very well priced. If you are going that big I'm assuming this might be something you want to keep for a long time and would look into new so that you get exactly what you want/need.

I came in under $2500 for everything on my concrete 12'x4x4. Way cheaper than I could buy it, even if I could get it in my house. Just have to have some patience, a little guidance, and sweat. But I agree with the others, for tanks under 600 gallons Craigslist and the mfk market place are the places to watch and really a DIY won't save you much money unless you go BIG.
