also, what is the advantage of this versus the old standby NLS or DIANICHI?

You'll have to check NLS or Danichi but here's the breakdown of Sumo Red vs. Hikari Bio-Gold for instance. Someone else will have to answer your question about when to feed though as I feed only Hikari Bio-Gold as most of what your fish will look like is in the gene's.

Grand Sumo Red: (They also make original formula too which may or may not be different)

Ingredients:
White Fish Meal Krill and Shrimp Meal Seaweed Meal, Spirulina, Omega 3 & 6 HUFA, Fish Liver Oil, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Rich Amino Acids (PHE, His, Iso, Leu, Arg, Trp, Met, Lys), Vitamin A,D,E, Riboflavin, Niacin,B6,B12,Biotin,Stabilised Vitamin C and Minerals (Ca,Cl,K,Na,P.Mg,ZN,MN,Cu,Se), Beta-Carotene, Astaxanthin, Cantazanthin, Phycocynin, Xanthophyl.

Guaranteed Content Analysis:
Min Crude Protein 45%
Max Ash 12.8%
Max Moisture 6.5%
Max Crude Fiber 3.5%
Max Crude Fat 3%

Vs.

Hikari Bio-Gold

Fish meal, wheat flour, brewers dried yeast, gluten meal, spirulina, fish oil, bacillus subtillis, enzyme, garlic, astaxanthin, monosodium glutamate, DL-methionine, vitamin A oil, vitamin D3, vitamin E, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, choline chloride, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, inositol, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, niacin, folic acid, biotin, ferrous sulfate, mangesium sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, cobalt sulfate, calcium iodate, aluminum hydroxide sodium acid pyrophosphate.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude protein (min) 45%
Crude fat (min) 5%
Crude fiber (max) 2%
Moisture (max) 10%
Ash (max) 15%
Phosphorus (min) 1%
Miro-organisms (min) 10,000 CFU/g
Vitamin A--26,000 IU/kg
Vitamin C--140 mg/kg
Vitamin D3--5,300 IU/kg
Vitamin E--900 mg/kg

If someone want to list Vitamin A,D,E measurments for Sumo Red that may help too. But just comparing those two:

Protein is equal
Hikari bio-gold has more fat
Grand sumo red has more fiber(probably because bio-gold supposed to be low waste formula)
Hikari has more moisture and more Ash(non actual fish parts like bone/scales)

Good right up on what all that fish food ingrediant jargon means here: http://www.aquariumguys.com/fish-food-guide-article.html

^^ Not FH specific but will help you understand what the amounts should be.

IMO I would mix these foods with other pellets/shrimp/krill. Variety is good. Maybe someone else can answer why chingmix/sumo are advatagous in depth.
